In practice, the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) has provided an improved foundation to communicate precise details of patients and their medical conditions. It is also used to code and bill for these diseases. As the ICD system evolves and the newer ICD-10 coding emerges, nephrology will need to examine the integral components of this new coding system and its impact on patient care.
