Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) may experience chronic pain for a variety of reasons. Recognizing that pain is often poorly identified, assessed, and taken seriously, the etiologies and evidence-based methods for assessing chronic pain will be a focus of this session. In addition, the obstacles faced by chronic pain sufferers in obtaining adequate treatment will be addressed in order to work toward relieving the problem of inadequate pain relief. Opioid pain medications that are safe for use in CKD patients will be discussed.
