More Than Skin Deep: Dermatologic Issues in Kidney Disease - Skin and Kidney Connection

Nephrology patients may experience various skin issues that cause discomfort. This workshop begins with a review of the skin-kidney connection with tips for conducting a systematic skin assessment for individuals with chronic kidney disease. The potential impact of immunosuppression and medications on skin integrity, considerations for patients with tattoos, management of skin conditions such as pruritus and calciphylaxis, and wound care are covered in this comprehensive workshop.

This session discusses the cultural trends and statistics on tattooing in the United States, along with the physiologic technique of tattooing. Position statements by nephrology organizations regarding the use of tattooing in chronic kidney disease and transplantation is outlined. A full skin exam on persons with tattoos and proper documentation is demonstrated and a list of hazards of tattooing, such as infection, Hepatitis C, Keloid formation, etc. is discussed.

This session explores wounds that never heal, which are a familiar problem for patients with CKD and their nephrology nurses. PVD, with all the edema and circulation issues, is discussed as to causation and pathophysiology. Assessment, treatment, and outcomes are the highlight of this session.
