Goal
To provide an overview of the incidence of gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in African-American patients undergoing hemodialysis using a descriptive correlational research design.

Objectives:

Explain the influence of culture and dietary intake in African-American patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) on hemodialysis (HD).
List gastrointestinal symptoms experienced by African-American patients with ESRD on HD.
Discuss factors other than adherence that may predict GI symptoms in African- American patients undergoing HD.
