Learning Outcome:
After completing this learning activity, the learner will be able to describe how poor immunosuppressive medication adherence prevalence results in costly, undesirable patient outcomes; discuss how cognitive (education, attitude, beliefs) and behavioral medication adherence interventions have proven largely ineffective for those with chronic illnesses, including adult kidney transplant recipients; evaluate an innovative six-month SystemCHANGE intervention followed by a six-month maintenance phase study designed to enhance immunosuppressive medication adherence improved medication adherence in older adult participant; and analyze how both medication taking and timing were markedly improved in this case resulting in clinically meaningful results.
