Goal
The purpose of this article is to review the literature related to hemodialysis dialysate potassium concentration on sudden cardiac death.
Objectives:
- Identify the role and importance of potassium in cardiac function.
- Discuss the evolution of knowledge related to varying potassium dialysate concentrations on reducing the risk of sudden cardiac death in persons on hemodialysis.
- Relate dietary and pharmacologic factors affecting serum potassium levels to the complexity of determining the appropriate potassium dialysate concentration.
