Goal
List several possible differential diagnoses for a patient doing peritoneal dialysis that develops “black”-appearing dialysate effluent.

  1. Discuss the indications for colonoscopy in the end stage renal disease (ESRD) population compared to the general population.
  2. List specific areas of assessment that need to be included in the evaluation of a patient doing peritoneal dialysis who develops a change in the character of their peritoneal dialysate effluent.
  3. Explain the rationale for including an individual’s recent exposures in determining the cause for a change in the appearance of their peritoneal dialysate effluent.
