Monique Bethell PhD, MPH

Dr. Monique Bethell currently serves as an equity and inclusion consultant in the Equity and Inclusion Department with UNC Health in North Carolina. Within this role, she works with healthcare entities to develop strategic plans that address the integration of equity and inclusion-based practices across the owned and managed entities in the UNC Health system. She is also the founder and owner of Soteria Health Corporation which focuses on strategic planning, training, and evaluation of programs that address systemic and structural inequities. With more than 20 years of public health experience, Dr. Bethell has provided strategic consultation and technical assistance to several public/private organizations, national, state, and local governments, and international agencies that focus on reducing inequities in marginalized populations. In addition to managing programs on reducing inequities and disparities, she is also a published author, has been featured on local media programs, coordinated and conducted several presentations, workshops and seminars related to health equity, community engagement, health disparities and health literacy. Over the last few years, Dr. Bethell has been primarily interested in addressing mental health, psychosocial determinants of health, workforce equity and equity-based food systems planning. Throughout her career, she has also served as adjunct faculty at multiple colleges and universities across NC teaching courses in public health, human sciences, research methods, psychology and sociology. As an extension of her expertise in health equity, leadership and advocacy, Dr. Bethell has worked with healthcare providers, and professional associations and community-based agencies to identify equity-based strategies that reduce disparities and related stigmas in clinical populations. She also produced an educational video series on health equity and clinic populations and is currently working on another video series and health equity discussion guide that focuses on Black Farmers in the food systems called “The Color of Farming”. Dr. Bethell received a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A) with a major in Marketing from Howard University. She received a master's and Ph.D. in Education from University of Maryland College Park in Human Development and Social Policy. She also received a 2nd master’s degree in public health (MPH) with a concentration in Health Education and Promotion.
