A Multidisciplinary Approach to Weight Loss in Pre-Transplant Candidates

Description

The obesity epidemic has had a vast impact on health care in the United States. The prevalence of this disease process on the CKD and pre-transplant patient influences health outcomes and needs to be addressed prior to the transplant process. Developing and implementing a program for weight loss in pre-transplant candidates to improve their long-term success is analyzed.

The resolution process for a conflict of interest will be documented in the activity file. The potential conflict of interest will be outlined to the planner/presenter/author on the Disclosure Form. The purpose of the disclosure is not to prevent a presenter/ content expert from presenting, but rather to provide the learners with information from which they may make their own decisions. Relevant relationships or potential COI will be identified to learners through a disclosure process.

Objectives:

  • Describe the extent of the global obesity epidemic and its current and predicted impact on global health.
  • Define obesity according to the World Health Organization definition.
  • Discuss the multidisciplinary team approach used by the Albany Medical Center ALOHA (Achieving a Life of Health and Activity) Project, which assists obese renal transplant candidates (ORTCs) to achieve a BMI < 35.
