National Symposium 2006

When the Outcome is Death: Lessons Learned from Terri Schiavo

Apr 2, 2006 8:00am ‐ Apr 2, 2006 4:00pm

Standard: $30.00
Members: $20.00

Even though we would like to avoid the topic of death, nephrology nurses know that it is a part of their practice. Terri Schiavo and her family brought this discussion to the world stage, and the dialogue needs to continue among family members and health care teams. This workshop will begin with a review of the legal issues surrounding a patient's desire to determine his/her end-of-life experience. Commonly used terms will be identified and discussed to ensure that we know what the words mean in legal terms. Ethical considerations will be explored using case studies and examples, particularly as they occur with renal patients in the nephrology nursing arena. The nurse's role in assisting patients and significant others through the end-of-life period is paramount to a successful journey. Faculty will share tips for initiating conversations with patients about end-of-life care. The workshop will wrap up with a discussion of hospice services - what they cover and how they assist patients and families.
