Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is being done more frequently in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs). This session addresses the benefits of PD in SNFs, pitfalls to avoid when starting a program, staff and patient education, as well as communication and collaborative care planning as essential components of a program’s success.

Peritoneal dialysis catheter placement is the focus of this session. Discussion includes removal of adhesions, postoperative catheter care, access maintenance, and management of complications. The primary focus is prevention of exit site infections, but treatment options are also addressed.
