Every hemodialysis patient has one or more vascular accesses. The patient and the dialysis care team have key roles and responsibilities to promote safety and preserve existing arteriovenous fistulas and arteriovenous grafts. Vascular access anatomy and critical thinking skills necessary to troubleshoot vascular access issues are reviewed.

The known risks for immunosuppressed patients are covered through examples and case studies. There are numerous transportation safety concerns related to the CKD population, especially in the transportation of ESRD patients to and from dialysis appointments. In the ever-changing care delivery systems for nephrology patients, coordination of transportation services can become extremely challenging and create time insufficiencies for staff. This multifaceted presentation will increase your knowledge base on transportation services, funds that are available for patients, and ways to improve efficiency of staff time in coordination of such efforts.
