Goal: To describe the similarities and differences in conventional and new peritoneal dialysis solutions in terms of biocompatibility, osmotic agents, and buffer bases.
Objectives:
Discuss the main strategies that have been employed to improve the characteristics of peritoneal dialysis solutions.
Describe the osmotic agents and buffer bases currently used in peritoneal dialysis solutions in terms of their effectiveness, potential uses, and side effects.
Compare various peritoneal dialysis solutions as to strengths, pH, glucose degradation products (GDPs), and availability.
